Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome signs and symptoms often appear anywhere from six hours to a number of days after a person with an alcohol use disorder has their last drink. Listed below are some of the most common:

  • tremors
  • anxiety
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • headache
  • an increased heart rate
  • sweating
  • irritability
  • confusion
  • insomnia
  • nightmares
  • high blood pressure


The most severe type of withdrawal is medically known as delirium tremens and commonly referred to as the (DT’s). DT’s often include some but can include all of the following conditions:

  • Severe confusion
  • Severe agitation
  • Fever
  • seizures
  • tactile hallucinations, (describes a sense of itching, burning, or
  • numbness that is not actually occurring)
  • auditory hallucinations, (hearing sounds that do not exist)
  • visual hallucinations, (seeing images that do not exist)


If you have severe Alcohol Withdrawal symptoms listed above, it is a medical emergency. You should call 911 emergency or go directly the emergency department of the nearest hospital to you.
