once-monthly vivitrol along with counseling may give you a path forward in your alcohol dependence recovery journey
Alcohol dependence can be very challenging, but you are not alone. After opioid detoxification if applicable, VIVITROL and counseling may help prevent relapse to alcohol dependence.
Vivitrol injection is also used to treat alcoholism by decreasing the desire to consume alcohol. This may assist someone in drinking less or refraining from drinking entirely. Patients should not consume alcohol before receiving their first naltrexone injection.
Vivitrol is a brand-name injectable form of Naltrexone that can be used to help patients stay sober while recovering from an opioid substance use disorder. Other Naltrexone formulations are available as oral tablets, but Vivitrol is given as an intramuscular injection once a month.
Before you start taking VIVITROL for alcohol, you must stop consuming opioids if you are currently taking opioids in combination with drinking alcohol. VIVITROL must be used in conjunction with other drug treatment programs, such as counseling, to be effective. VIVITROL may not be suitable for all people. VIVITROL is not known to be safe or effective in children.
The urge to drink is experienced in the brain. When people who are prone to alcohol dependence drink, the brain releases an excessive amount of pleasurable chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins cause the release of another pleasurable chemical called dopamine. This is primarily responsible for the urge to drink and alcoholism.
Vivitrol blocks endorphins from attaching to brain cells. This may prevent the excessive release of dopamine. It is believed that this is how Vivitrol may block the excessive reward of alcohol.
