What Is Spravato (Esketamine)?
Spravato (esketamine) is a groundbreaking treatment designed for major depressive disorder (MDD) and treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Unlike traditional antidepressants, which can take weeks or months to show effects, Spravato works rapidly — often providing relief within hours or days.
Esketamine, a derivative of ketamine, targets the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor in the brain — a receptor linked to major depressive disorder. By modulating it, Spravato helps restore synaptic connections, offering a new pathway to relieve depressive symptoms. It is administered as a nasal spray in our office, under supervision, for both effectiveness and safety.
How Spravato Works
What makes it different from oral antidepressants:
-
Rapid relief
Unlike oral antidepressants that take weeks, Spravato often provides relief within hours or days.
-
NMDA receptor
Esketamine targets the NMDA receptor, restoring synaptic connections involved in mood regulation.
-
Nasal spray
Administered as a nasal spray under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
-
Add-on therapy
Spravato does not replace your oral antidepressant; it works alongside it.

Taken in-office as a nasal spray. You’ll stay for about two hours of monitoring due to side effects such as mild dissociation.
The first month
Twice-weekly sessions. Most patients see significant improvement in their depressive symptoms during this period.
Ongoing care
Treatments space out to every one to two weeks. Your provider adjusts the plan with you as symptoms improve.
