OVERVIEW

Understanding Kratom

Kratom is derived from Mitragyna speciosa, a plant native to Southeast Asia, and is legally sold in Virginia as capsules or powder. Though technically in the same family as caffeine, its chemicals stimulate the same brain receptors as many opiates, stimulant-like at low doses, sedative and euphoric like opioids at higher doses.
Marketed as a “natural supplement” and a way to self-manage opioid withdrawal, kratom’s easy availability has led many people into dependence, taking higher and higher doses without realizing it. Its chemicals can also interfere with how the liver metabolizes other medications, creating dangerous interactions ranging from seizures to liver damage.

Signs of Kratom Abuse

People who may be abusing kratom often exhibit:
  • Dilated pupils
Along with slurred, slower, groggy-sounding speech.
  • Sedation
Appearing tired, as if on the verge of falling asleep.
  • Itchy skin
Obsessive scratching is a common physical sign.
  • Neglected hygiene
Showering and everyday grooming become less important.
  • Financial strain
Poor financial standing as use escalates.
