OVERVIEW

What Is Suboxone?

Suboxone is a combination medication containing buprenorphine and naloxone, used to treat opioid dependence. Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist that reduces withdrawal symptoms and cravings; naloxone is an opioid antagonist included to deter misuse.
Buprenorphine binds to opioid receptors in the brain, reducing withdrawal and cravings without the intense euphoria of full opioid agonists. Taken as prescribed (sublingually), the naloxone has minimal effect — but if injected, it can precipitate withdrawal, which is what deters misuse.

Benefits of Suboxone

Why Suboxone is a cornerstone of medication-assisted treatment:
  • Reduced withdrawal
Alleviates the physical symptoms of opioid withdrawal, making detoxification more manageable.
  • Reduced cravings
By binding to opioid receptors, buprenorphine reduces cravings and supports long-term recovery.
  • Misuse deterrent
Naloxone helps prevent misuse by inducing withdrawal if the medication is injected.
  • Safe and effective
A proven option for many individuals, providing stability and reducing relapse risk.
